MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Barney Hester announced his candidacy for the Bibb County Board of Education, District 4 seat on Monday.

According to a campaign news release, he’s running to continue his legacy of supporting teachers, including parents and always putting students first.

“I’m ready to put my 47 years experience, as a coach, educator and administrator, to work supporting our teachers and providing the best possible opportunities for our students,” Hester said in the release. “This is the principle that will guide my service on the school board.”

Hester retired from coaching in 2018 and became the athletic director for Bibb County Schools, serving in that role until 2021.

He was Tattnall Square Academy’s head football coach from 1982 to 2012 before taking over the head football coaching position at Bibb County’s Howard High School from 2013-2017.

“Winning on the field is great, but the real win is the opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of students,” he said. “After 47 years in our schools, I thought I was ready to step away. But I’ve got more to give, and I am going to give this my all.”

Election Day is May 21. Early voting begins April 29.
