Baldwin High School forms first ever flag football team

"I got a little nervous but once I got on that field I just fell into my natural element."

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia(41NBC/WMGT)— Baldwin High school has launched its first flag football team. They played their first game of the season on October 12. Despite losing the game, the team says they’re ready for the next one.

Angelise Hicks is a senior at Baldwin High School and a player on the team. She says she was nervous going into the first game.

“I got a little nervous but once I got on that field I just fell into my natural element.”

The Flag football team consists of 21 girls from 9 through the 12 grade. Hicks says they’re ready to tackle the next game.

“I feel confident in myself and my team, because I feel like at practice we’ve been working hard and doing what we need to do to improve and fixing our mistakes that we made in our first game.”

Camelia Darrisaw who is also a senior, says going into the game was nerve wracking.

“I was scared we prayed a lot, like before we came out here we were in the locker room, just like okay okay, let’s pray, so we said about at least 2 prayers then we came out here and then we prayed again, and then when we actually got out there we were tired at first, but the second game everyone loosen up and we just had fun like we do at practice.”

For many of the girls on the team, it’s their first time playing flag football. According to coach Tara Burney, she wants to win but more importantly have fun.

“I want my girls to understand, that sports develops leadership skills, from that first game our girls learned a lot,” said coach Burney.

The next game is October 26. Their first home game is November 2.
