(NBC)- Families are planning to spend less on back-to-school shopping this year, even as the cost of school supplies remains high.
A new NerdWallet survey found shoppers expect to spend about $130 less than they did last year, despite little relief from higher prices. Researchers say many households are cutting back on school shopping to help cover other everyday expenses.
The survey also found 25% of shoppers plan to reduce their back-to-school spending to make room in th eir budgets for necessities like housing, groceries and utility bills.
Parents say they’re stretching their dollars by focusing only on essential items. Some are reusing uniforms, backpacks and other supplies that are still in good condition instead of replacing everything each school year.
Many shoppers are also taking advantage of store promotions and lower-priced school supplies to keep costs down.
Experts recommend shopping early before the busy August rush, when popular items can become harder to find and prices may be less competitive.
