“Back to School Bash” for Twiggs County Students

JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Twiggs County students were treated to a “Back to School Bash,” Friday.

Teachers, faculty and staff gave away free school supplies to more than 600, elementary, middle and high school students.

“We want them to be prepared and have all of the supplies that they need,” says, Twiggs County School Superintendent Elgin Dixon. “We understand that we’re in tough economic times and during these tough economic times it calls for drastic measures.

Dixon says the “Back to School Bash” was a community effort and several business donated funds and supplies.

Deborah Thompson brought her grandson to the “Back to School Bash.” She says parents who have more than one child in school are having difficulty trying to purchase school supplies for all of them.

“A lot of people just don’t have the money, to do this anymore, and every grade is different and it’s just hard, so this a good thing,” says Thompson.

Jackie Curtis is a Graduation Coach at Twiggs County High School and an organizer of the event.

“I think it’s very important for the community, students and parents to understand that we are here for them holistically,” says Curtis.

Central Georgia Technical College and Fort Valley University had representatives at the event to speak to high school students about continuing their education after graduation.

Twiggs County High School Principal, Jamie Paulk says he wants what is best for his students.

“We have the privilege and honor of giving to our community, resource to help them to perform better in the classroom and this is a wonderful opportunity and we’re grateful,” says Paulk.
