The B.S. Report: It’s going to take time for the Bulldogs, Eagles
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – So a few days ago the Georgia Bulldogs lost. So did Georgia Southern. It was one game, one loss for both programs. But you would have thought the world was coming to an end.
Fan bases overreact all the time. We – college football fans – simply do not like our teams to lose. We take it personally. It physically hurts many of us when our team loses. But if you were on any message board for Georgia or Georgia Southern over the weekend, you might have thought the season was over and both teams hadn’t won in months.
Both teams are 3-1. It’s not perfect, but for fans to call for Kirby Smart and Tyson Summers to be fired… Really?
First of all, Georgia is talent-deprived. There’s just not enough talent. Someone sent me an article Monday about a look at Georgia’s recruiting classes in 2013 and 2014. Of the 51 players signed in those classes by former head coach Mark Richt, 24 are now gone. Of the 27 who are left, there are only three senior starters and eight junior starters. Plus, from the 2013 class, only one of the Top 10 ranked players is a contributor – center Brandon Kublanow – and only three of those Top 10 are still on the team. That should be the core of Georgia’s team right now. Georgia’s offensive line is a mess. The wide receivers have not emerged. The secondary has not been as good as people thought. There are not many positions that have depth. This team – the Georgia program – needs work.
Kirby Smart has tried to tell us for the last nine months. He needs more talent to get Georgia where the fans want it to go. Sure, the game two weeks ago against Nicholls was bad. The loss four days ago to Ole Miss was embarrassing. They better play better this week at home against Tennessee or it might happen again. But to call for Smart’s head? Someone actually sent me a serious post from someone else on Facebook, where the “fan” said Georgia should immediately demote Smart to defensive coordinator and hire Les Miles, who was fired by LSU on Sunday.
As for Georgia Southern, come on. Western Michigan is a good football team. The loss stung, but really? Summers is an impressive young coach. He was in Macon Monday at the Touchdown Club. You’re in good hands Georgia Southern fans, and remember, you’re 2-0 in the Sun Belt Conference.
So come on fans. Take your medication and chill out. It was one game. These are new coaches, and no one expected either team to be perfect. I know we all want blood when there is a loss, but relax, take a deep breath and let the season play out before firing someone who just got hired.
