The B.S. Report: Figuring out the SEC East

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – What will happen this season in the SEC East?

Florida has won it two years in a row, but no one knows – at least yet – who their quarterback will be. Tennessee has the same problem. We’re not exactly sure who will replace Joshua Dobbs. Will that be enough for Georgia to win the SEC East?

Well, perhaps. But it’s really going to come down to Georgia’s head-to-head games against Tennessee and Florida. Georgia will play the Vols on September 29th in Knoxville, and you know that Nick Chubb, who got hurt there two years ago, will want revenge. Tennessee has two tough games before that – against Georgia Tech on Labor Day night and then two weeks later in Gainesville. The worry for Georgia is that if Tennessee loses those games the Vols might be trying to save Butch Jones’ job. Tennessee has a lot of players to replace from last year, so their expectations are lower. But it’s still a scary task for Georgia to go to Knoxville and win on the road.

Then, of course, the game in Jacksonville a month later against the Gators could determine which one of those two teams plays in Atlanta in early December. Georgia is going to have to beat Florida to win the division, and after having three good wins against the Gators, Georgia has now lost three in a row. If Kirby Smart is to make Georgia great again, they’ve just got to beat Florida. It’s really that simple. And with the Gators having to replace a lot of players on defense, and their question at quarterback, this could be the season.

Georgia, at least on paper, is the best team in the SEC East. Of course, the Georgia offensive line must lead the way. It’s going to be brand new – five new players at new positions – and if the offensive line is better, the Bulldogs are going to score more than 24.5 points per game, which is what they scored last season. You hate to put a team’s success on one part of the roster, but for Georgia, it’s all about that offensive line. If it’s better, they’ll be better than 8-5 and will likely win the SEC East. If they can win the division, we’ll worry about what happens in Atlanta later.

But the first step for the Bulldogs to get back on track is to become the team to beat in their own division. With the questions the Gators and Vols have this season, Georgia should do it this year. It’s the next step for Coach Smart to get Georgia to where he wants this program to be – a lot more relevant than they’ve been in year’s past.

Once again, it’s all about the Dawgs, Gators and the Vols. And this is the year for Georgia to be mentioned first as the team to beat in the SEC East.
