The B.S. Report: Braves playing better baseball on stretch run
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – I know it’s football season, but we need to talk about the Braves.
Remember – the baseball team in Atlanta?
You might not have been watching recently, but the Braves have been playing better. They have a winning record in September – 10 wins and 8 losses. They are now a .500 team since August 1st – at 23 and 23. Last year the Braves are awful in August and September – 18 wins and 37 losses.
There are a few people who deserve credit for this. First, Brian Snitker – the former Macon Braves manager – is proving he is a very good major league manager. The Braves had a .243 winning percentage under Fredi Gonzalez the season before he was fired. Under Snitker, the Braves have a .447 winning percentage. And a team that was once on pace for 120 losses should avoid a 100-loss season. The Braves have to win just three of their last 11 games to avoid that, and while that may seem trivial, it is important.
Snitker stopped the dumpster fire that was going on earlier this season and brought some professionalism and tranquility to the clubhouse. His easy-going approach and support for his guys has won over the Braves players, and the Braves need to take the interim label off Snitker’s title and make him the permanent manager. Brian Snitker deserves to the be full-time manager of this team moving forward. He’s proven that he is good at managing a big league team.
For this team to do this well, with the rotation in shambles for most of the season, is amazing. The front office, led by general manager John Coppolella, deserves credit for bringing in left fielder Matt Kemp. The lineup has been completely different with Kemp providing protection for first baseman Freddie Freeman, who is having his best season and is now worth every penny of his big contract. Freeman deserves credit for embracing his role as a leader and making this team better.
The Braves’ lineup was awful earlier this season, but Ender Inciarte, Nick Markakis and Adonis Garcia have all played really well in the second half of the season. Plus, rookie Dansby Swanson has been really good since coming up.
The Braves need pitching, and they’ll get some arms this offseason. But the organization is full of young pitching prospects. They may not be ready next year, but they are coming. The Braves have the best farm system in baseball, mainly due to their young pitchers. You’ll know the names like Sean Newcomb, Kolby Allard, Max Fried, Touki Toussaint and Mike Soroka really soon.
So be patient Braves fans. This year was not very fun. But the Braves will win again, and the new Sun Trust Park will have winning baseball, hopefully with Brian Snitker managing the Atlanta Braves.
