Atrium Health Navicent shares tips to stay safe in Middle Georgia heat
As temperatures rise across Middle Georgia, Atrium Health Navicent is sharing tips to help people stay safe during the summer heat.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As temperatures and humidity increase across Middle Georgia, Atrium Health Navicent is encouraging people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Justin Malcolm with Atrium Health Navicent said he’s not currently seeing a large number of patients with heat-related illnesses, but he said people should be especially mindful of the effects of humidity.
Malcolm said humidity causes the body to lose additional water, making it important to stay hydrated throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty.
For people who do not like drinking plain water, Malcolm said electrolyte packets or drinks such as Liquid I.V., Gatorade and Powerade can help replace fluids. He recommended avoiding caffeinated and sugary beverages because they can contribute to dehydration.
Malcolm also encourages people to plan outdoor activities during the early morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are typically lower. He said people spending time outside should wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen. He recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapplying it as directed.
He also advises avoiding prolonged outdoor activity between noon and 6 p.m., when temperatures are often at their highest.
Malcolm said people should seek medical attention if they experience confusion, body aches, muscle cramps, a lack of sweating or a body temperature above 104 degrees. He also recommends seeing a doctor if a sunburn develops blisters.
As summer temperatures continue, Atrium Health Navicent encourages people to monitor the weather, stay hydrated and take precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
