Atrium Health doctor shares safety tips ahead of July 4 celebrations
From firework duds to heat exhaustion and water safety, Dr. Rebecca Gay wants Middle Georgians to enjoy the holiday without a trip to the emergency room.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With July 4 approaching, Dr. Rebecca Gay, medical director at Atrium Health Navicent Milledgeville, is urging residents to keep safety in mind as they celebrate the holiday.
When it comes to fireworks, Gay said the biggest concern is so-called “duds.” If a lit firework fails to go off, residents should not approach it, as it can still explode at any time.
Heat is another concern. Gay recommends limiting time in direct sun, staying in the shade, and drinking plenty of water. For those setting up outdoor events, she advises getting the work done in the morning before temperatures peak.
Water safety is equally important, particularly for families with children. Swimming or boating under the influence of alcohol poses a danger not only to adults but to children in the water as well. Gay also cautions parents to keep a close watch on children while swimming and to keep them away from fireworks and sparklers without adult supervision.
Gay said the goal is simply to make sure the memories made this holiday don’t come at a cost.
“It’s a celebration, and we wanna make so many memories with our family. But the important part is to stay safe — so we want to build those memories but not include the emergency room,” Gay said.
