Runoff results: Andrea Cooke wins Macon-Bibb District 5 race

Unofficial results show Cooke received more than 70% of the vote in Tuesday’s election.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Andrea Cooke has won the Macon-Bibb County Commission District 5 seat following Tuesday’s runoff election.

According to unofficial results from the Bibb County Board of Elections, Cooke received 746 votes, or about 70.5% of the vote.

Edward Foster received 313 votes, about 29.5%.

The runoff was required after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 17 special election. Cooke led that initial election with 49.53% of the vote, just short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.

Tuesday’s election determines who will fill the District 5 seat left vacant after former commissioner Seth Clark resigned earlier this year.

Cooke is a District 5 resident who works in the mental health field and has been involved in community and nonprofit work, according to her campaign.

She released a statement after the results of the runoff, “Thank you so much to the voters of District 5 for entrusting me with this solemn responsibility. I will work tirelessly to deliver affordable housing, stronger public safety, more good-paying jobs and improved access to mental health care,” said Andrea Cooke. “The results from tonight’s election show that Macon-Bibb is ready to move forward – and I am ready to get to work for District 5.”
