American Red Cross prepares for Hurricane Irma
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – People looking to escape the storm are expected to seek safety in middle Georgia.
If you haven’t gassed up your car or prepared your emergency kit with extra food. American Red Cross staff members say you need to get ready.
“I tell my team it’s like a baseball team, we’re stepping up to the plate and we’re getting ready to bat and we want to hit a home run,” says Rodney Miller who is the Disaster Program Manager at American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross is prepared for major disasters. with hurricane Irma expected to hit Florida within the next few days, preparations are all set in middle Georgia.
Miller says, “We are planning anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 people to come in to our community. Our streets are going to be fuller, we’re going to have more cars, have more people in restaurants and more people in grocery stores.”
The American Red Cross will deliver trailers to various shelter locations. miller says these trailers carry everything that is needed to survive.
“We have cots, blankets, towels, everything needed for feeding, snacks, water, we even have generators if we lose power, we need power to mandate different things and we also have stuff set up for special needs or even medical needs,” Miller explains.
Even though middle Georgia is not a coastal community, the American Red Cross is urging local residents to also be prepared with emergency kits at home; those should include extra food, water, batteries, flash lights, and prescription medication.
