American Red Cross designates South Bibb Rec Center as shelter during Hurricane Michael

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – American Red Cross is advising everyone to seek shelter from Hurricane Michael.

The American Red Cross is expecting to shelter over 200 Hurricane Michael evacuees at South Bibb Recreational Center. When you arrive you’ll check in and receive a care kit with hygiene items.

“Michael is a very strong category four hurricane, so we’re expecting the potential to be a category one as it passes through the Middle Georgia region,” Chris Floore with the Macon-Bibb County Office of Public Affairs.

As a public service announcement due to Hurricane Michael’s anticipated damage from the American Red Cross to stay inside.

“Please, if you feel it’s not safe out there, come to the shelter. Don’t stay in your house,” American Red  Cross Shelter Manager Stephen Pollitt said.

The Red Cross is designating South Bibb Recreational Center on Houston Road as a shelter.

“We expect people to come in north, who are evacuating coastal areas or evacuating Southern Georgia. We also would hope that anyone who’s living in a trailer home that they feel is not safe, would seek shelter right away rather than try to stay,” Pollitt said.

At the shelter, the Red Cross does provide food, but asks you bring a few other items with you.

“We don’t offer pillows. We do offer blankets and we give comfort kits with the essentials for hygiene. We suggest you bring a towel. We do have showers here,” Pollitt said.

Wherever you are at dinner time, Floore is encouraging everyone to stay there until 8 a.m. Thursday.

“We will not be able to roll our emergency response crews until after this passes and we need the roads clear so they can do a damage assessment and respond as necessary,” Floore said.

Red Cross is expecting to open two other shelters during the course of the storm. Rosa Jackson Center in East Macon is next on the list and can hold over 400 people.

South Bibb Rec is not allowing animals. However, Macon-Bibb County Animal Welfare is an emergency shelter for your pets.

They just ask that you pick them up by Friday.
