Alamo mayor and city clerk arrested, accused of stealing city funds

ALAMO, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The GBI arrested the Alamo mayor and city clerk Friday for allegedly stealing government funds from the city.

According to the GBI, the Oconee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office requested the state agency investigate the accusations in May. According to DA Timothy Vaughn, his office received complaints from citizens.

Investigators arrested Mayor Debbie Fountain and City Clerk Gail Brown on Friday. Fountain and Brown are both charged with one count of felony theft by taking. Vaughn says they could possibly face more charges.

Fountain and Brown turned themselves into the Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office. According to arrest reports, they both posted a $5,000 bond and have been released.

The GBI did not say how much money was allegedly stolen.

The investigation is ongoing.
