Aguebor and Brown Featured in PFL Postseason Honors

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – After leading Mercer into the NCAA record books in 2013, Tosin Aguebor and Robert Brown have landed on the All-Pioneer Football League squads as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

A day after John Russ was named the PFL Offensive Freshman of the Year, Aguebor has been selected a first-team all-league performer at linebacker, while Brown was named second-team at tight end.

Aguebor, a redshirt freshman linebacker from Johns Creek, Ga., broke through in a huge way for the Bears in 2013, recording 10.0 sacks, 13.0 tackles for loss and seven quarterback hurries. He finished the year ranked No. 9 in the country with four forced fumbles and added 21 solo tackles and 25 assisted tackles.

“Tosin was a vital part of our dynamic defensive,” said head coach Bobby Lamb. “His presence was felt every week and opponents could not overlook his athleticism and ability to get in the back field.”

Brown, a freshman from Nashville, Tenn., proved to be a primary target at the tight end position in Mercer’s return to the gridiron, catching a pass in all 12 games and recording five touchdowns. He was on the receiving end of Mercer’s first touchdown in 72 years when he hauled in a 37-yard score against Reinhardt. Brown finished with 21 receptions for 308 yards, including a season-long 46-yard catch against Jacksonville.

“Robert was one of the most consistent players for us all year,” Lamb said. “He made huge plays down the stretch of some close games and always came up big when we called his number.”

Four Mercer players were featured as honorable mentions to the all-conference squads, as JeTarii Donald (RB), Kirby Southard (OL), Alex Avant (DB) and Tyler Zielenske (PK) all made appearances for the Bears.

The Academic All-PFL team will be released Wednesday, concluding the league’s awards week.
