Veterinarian warns dog owners of heat exhaustion
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As temperatures climb in Middle Georgia, veterinarians are asking dog owners to keep a close eye on them if you leave them outside.
Brantley and Jordan Animal Hospital in Macon wants dog owners to watch for signs of heat exhaustion.
“They need shade, they also need to always have clean, cool water,” Dr. Jeff Brantley said.
Dr. Brantley has seen dogs die after their temperature reaches more than 108 degrees.
“And if they’re walking them make sure it’s early or late in the day and if they’re running, especially runners be careful with dogs because they’re not made to go long distances without stopping,” Dr. Brantley said.
If you think your dog could be suffering from heat exhaustion, Brantley says to wet their paws with water and get them out of direct sunlight. If they’re not getting better or are unresponsive call a vet.
