Bibb County Sheriff’s Office inmate transportation safety
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It can be a scary situation for some people when they hear convicts are on the run.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has strategies in place to keep inmates from escaping.
On Tuesday, June 13, 2017 two inmates allegedly overpowered two correctional officers and shot and killed them as they were being transported to another facility in Putnam County.
In Bibb County, deputies are getting around the clock training to try to prevent something like this from happening.
“I mean we’re all family and losing a loved one; that’s like losing a brother or sister,” says Captain Chris Patterson who works in the Corrections Division.
“Each one of our deputies who are assigned to the transport division are trained at our home facilities on the policies and procedures of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office,” Patterson adds.
Captain Patterson also says deputies take precautions when transporting inmates.
“Every inmate who leaves this facility, they’re searched, they’re shackled, they’re belly chained and hand-cuffed,” he explains.
No matter of their charges, the safety of the officers and other inmates are priority.
Patterson says, “t doesn’t matter if you’re here for child support, going to court or if you’re here for murder, we treat everybody with the upmost seriousness.”
By taking precautions for the safety of everyone who may be in a dangerous situation and even the ones living in the area, is the main goal for The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
“We do whatever it takes to get the job done and make sure that the citizens of Bibb County are safe and can sleep at night,”Patterson continues.
Captain Patterson says the deputies take classes on transporting, handcuffing and searching to become more proficient at their job.
