Macon-Bibb prepping for pedestrian bridge on Mercer University Drive

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – If you drive on Mercer University Drive, you may need to plan a detour for the next couple of weeks. The county is installing a new pedestrian bridge connecting the new Lofts at Mercer Landing to Mercer’s campus.

The first phase of the project begins on March 28th at 5:00 p.m.

All westbound lanes near the project will be closed and re-routed to the eastbound lane.

The  second phase of the project will last from April 5th at 5:00 p.m. until the bridge is set on April 8.

All lanes of Mercer University Drive between Stadium Drive and College Street will be closed. Traffic will be routed around the Lofts of Mercer Landing.

“We’ll continue to have temporary road closures when we’re working on the bridge. We don’t want to pour concrete on somebody’s car or drop a wrench. So there will be some detours that’ll go on for about two more weeks after that,” Clay Murphy, the county’s SPLOST coordinator, said.

Leaders say the bridge is supposed to be open to the public by mid-July.

The county is spending about $2 million on the bridge.
