29 arrested in multi-state sex trafficking bust
U.S. Attorney Michael Moore announced federal authorities arrested 29 people in 13 different cities across eight states in an operation called “Operation Safe Haven.”
The investigation started in Moultrie. Federal authorities rescued 15 victims, most of whom are from Central and South America.
Moore says he wants others to come forward.
“Human sex trafficking is a cancer that we must cut out, and then aggressively fight with all our resources” US Attorney Michael Moore said.
10 of those arrested were in Georgia. The indictment charges six people with conspiracy to participate in the sex trafficking of a minor. 38 people are charged with conspiracy to transport a person in interstate commerce for prostitution.
“I also know that there are other victims out there. If we were here today talking about we saved one victim, that would be enough for me to call in everybody to come listen to us talk about it because I think it’s worth that,” Moore said.
Nine people are still at large in the case.
Six suspects are charged with conspiracy to participate in the sex trafficking of a minor.
All 38 people are charged with conspiracy to transport a person in interstate commerce for prostitution.
Penalties range from five years to life in prison and a $250,000.
