Lots of rain, slight chance of severe weather today

Middle Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Farms and lawns rejoice! After a dry July and a dry start to August, Middle Georgia will now enjoy a day of rainfall. The day starts warm with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, but with the increased cloud cover and precipitation today, temperatures will be kept lower than the sweltering hot temperatures we’ve experienced this summer.

The high today will be around 92, but expect a lot of variation there. With the rainfall as widespread as it’s forecasted to be, I expect plenty of areas to be in the 80s this afternoon and maybe even 70s, depending on how heavy the rain is in your neighborhood. CAPE (convective available potential energy) is high enough today that our SPC outlook puts us at a slight chance for severe weather. Usually, we’ll see at most a marginal chance in the summer, so this is a bump up. Still, slight chance doesn’t mean widespread severe storms, but don’t be surprised if a few warnings pop up in Middle Georgia. The biggest concern for any severe storm today is high wind.

This system that’s moving through the area leaves tomorrow afternoon, so tomorrow’s highest rain chances will be in the morning and early Friday afternoon. This weekend looks drier with lower humidity, though it’ll still be hot in the mid 90s.
