Ways to save this Tax Free Weekend

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – School supplies and electronics are hot items this Tax Free Weekend. Some would say the two go hand in hand because a tablet could be considered a school supply for a college student. Store owners are preparing for a big crowd this weekend, as people look for ways to save this Sales Tax Holiday.

Just because there’s a lot of money going into the cash register, doesn’t mean a lot of money has to leave your wallet.

“They can save the 7% sales tax Friday and Saturday,” said Ed Vogel, the Co-Owner of GA School Supply on Mercer University Drive in Macon.

Georgia’s Tax Free Weekend runs from July 31 until August 1 and people are already preparing for savings.

“We’re looking at well over 200 people each day,” explained Vogel.

People can save big on purchases like school supplies, computers, and clothing.

“This is a great time to really leverage our sales,” said Erica Abner, the Assistant Store Manager of Sales at Best Buy in Macon.

To get the most out of your dollar this weekend, try to plan ahead and have an idea of what you want. Keep an eye out for low prices and remember to be a smart shopper.

“If there’s something that they feel they need for later on in the school year, they could save a lot,” explained Vogel.

If you want you electronics to be tax-free, make sure each item is less than $1,000.

“If it rings over $1,600, but it’s two different items at $800 a piece, we will do two separate transactions to make sure that you get that tax free item,” said Abner.

Store owners and employees want to make sure you leave with a purchase that makes you happy.

There are certain items not on the exempt list like batteries and TV’s. For the full list of items click here.
