Forsyth family who inspired state’s medical marijuana bill loses home in fire
According to Monroe County Fire Chief Donny Mercer, the Cox family’s home on Maynard Mill Road is a total loss. Mercer tells 41NBC it was an accidental fire caused by some kind of electrical malfunction. No one was hurt.
Fire crews were able to save some of their belongings, including photos.
Janea Cox and her daughter Haleigh moved to Colorado in 2014 so the young girl could take cannabis oil to treat her severe seizure disorder. This year, the Georgia General Assembly passed Haleigh’s Hope Act which decriminalizes cannabis oil and allows people who suffer from eight medical conditions to use it legally in the state.
Janea and Haleigh were set to move back to Georgia next week. According to a Facebook post, they will not be flying back home as planned.
The family’s church, Northway Church in Macon, is taking donations to help the Cox family. If you would like to help, you can call the church at (478) 476-1971 or visit www.northwaychurch.net.
