Members discuss human trafficking at Macon Rotary Club
Dave McCleary, the head of End Human Trafficking Now, was invited to the club’s Wednesday meeting and gave a presentation on the perils of an industry that brings in nearly $40 billion on a global scale.
McCleary says it is important for the community to get involved with this problem in order to help stamp it out, “Part of what we’re doing is we’re engaging. Not just Rotary Clubs, but communities.”
According to McCleary, only the drug trade rakes in more money annually than human trafficking, with the latter bringing in $9.8 billion in the United States alone. He also says some of the victims being forced into sex slavery could be as young as 9-years-old.
“This is happening all around us,” McCleary went on to say, “It could be their daughter… or their son. So we’ll make sure they’re aware of what’s going on.”
