Smoke covers parts of Macon during controlled burn, forest fire
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Smoke covered parts of the city Saturday thanks to high winds blowing through a both a Bibb County forest fire and a controlled burn in Crawford County.
The Georgia Forestry Commission was conducting a controlled burn when high winds forced flames to spread outside of the contained area on Knoxville Road, according to Macon-Bibb County Battalion Chief Stephen Stafford.
During that time, a nearby homeowner was burning a fire in his backyard that was also taken over by high winds. The forest fire burned nearly seven acres of woods, Stafford said.
Fire officials say they responded to the forest fire around 1 p.m. Once the first responders arrived on the scene of the forest fire, they determined there was more than one fire, explained Stafford.
“There was a lot of smoke in the area and we could not find where all this smoke was coming from at the same time, we knew that it was more smoke generated from more than this Knoxville area,” said Stafford.
Chief Stafford added that more than 18 Macon-Bibb County firefighters responded to both fires on Knoxville Road and Missouri Roads.
A few firefighters were used to battle the forest fire flames and others were sent to help extinguish the controlled burn fire.
