Hawkinsville Marine Comes Home Injured, Meets His Son for the First Time

Tony Mullis was a Marine in Afghanistan, serving his second tour of duty, when a landmine blew up underneath him, and took off both of his legs.

But just one day before the accident, Tony listened to the cries of his brand new baby boy.

“It was devastating. Almost surreal. But you just can’t believe that this is happening to your family…we’re just so excited and on cloud nine one day, and then the very next day, we’re just devastated,” Mullis’ Aunt Tina explains.

Mullis is a 20 year old Hawkinsville, Georgia native. A city where everyone knows everyone else’s name, and news like this spreads like wildfire.

Sandy Grinstead of Tom and Sandy’s Horseshoe Restaurant, heard the news, and started a fundraiser to help out the Mullis family.

“I didn’t really know what I was doing,” Grinstead explained. “And I still don’t know. It’s all a whirlwind. But I believe God told me to do this because the family would be traveling.”

Tony is now back in the United States, and will be in recovery and physical therapy for 1-2 years. Tony’s wife Jeannie and their son were able to make the trip to Maryland, where Tony is recovering.

Tony’s Aunt Tina says Tony is in good spirits.
