5 Washington County players to play college football

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Not many schools can boast about 5 different players signing on National Signing Day, but Washington County High School can.

“I was just along for the ride–I felt like I was driving a Ferrari, trying not to crash it,” said Washington County Head Coach Joel Ingram.

He’s not exactly driving a car, but Joel Ingram’s Washington County Golden Hawks can make him feel that way sometimes.

“These guys will be team captains, leaders in their school,” said Ingram.”We’re very player driven, all our success is due to these kids.”

Five of the many players turning the wheels of Washington County’s state championship runner-up season were on stage Wednesday–taking the next turn on the road map of their careers.

AJ Gray is heading to Georgia Tech next fall.

“Just to have the opportunity to play in the ACC, you can’t ask for a bigger stage,” said AJ Gray.

CJ Davis will play for Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina.

“The class sizes are very small, I’m going to go and get my education–be good at it,” said Davis.

Logan Hunt is taking a quick trip down to Statesboro at Georgia Southern.

“(What are you looking forward to most? Getting on the football field maybe?) Oh, yes sir, most definitely, but also, getting good grades,” said Hunt.

Stacy Thompson bounced back from a year-ending knee injury and will play at Fort Valley State.

“I had to work extra hard just to get a scholarship, it’s really a blessing for me not to play a whole senior season and still be able to get a scholarship and still have someone believe in me,” said Thompson.

Will Coneway is staying close to home as well, playing at Mercer.

“Close to home was very important to me because I always want to be in contact with my family, I want to come see my little brother play football, just want to visit my grandmother, my grandparents, so it was great being close to home,” said Coneway.

Where ever they navigate to, Coach Ingram is sure they’ll be great men.

“They’re the full embodiment of what we try to instill in our players,” said Coach Ingram.
