Bobcat women drop 76-71 contest at Armstrong

SAVANNAH, Ga. (GC ATHLETICS) – Despite putting four in double-figure scoring, the Georgia College women’s basketball team (7-8, 3-5 PBC) couldn’t get past Armstrong State University (8-7, 6-2 PBC) on the road, falling 76-71.

The Bobcats had a 34-27 halftime lead, but it wouldn’t hold up, as Armstrong hit 4-for-5 from downtown in the second half to pull of the win.

Senior Shanteona Keys (Roswell) led Georgia College with 19 points, yanking down eight boards, including five on the offensive glass. Freshman Alyah McGriff (Suwanee) added 14 points, her third double-digit scoring game.

Belinda Schaafsma (Momence, Illinois) and LaRice Walker (Franklin) each chipped in 13 points to the cause.

The Bobcats out-shot the Pirates 50 percent (29-58) to 46 percent (28-61) for the game, but the Pirates turned up the heat in the second half, hitting at a 63 percent clip, including the 4-of-5 from long range.

Shermika Harris led all scorers with 21 points, including four three-point buckets, while 2014 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Freshman of the Year Brigitta Barta added 18 and Dee Hayward 17 with five assists.

The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Jan. 19 at 1:30 p.m., hosting Flagler College.
