Missing Computers Cost Macon $86K

75 computers at the City of Macon’s IT Department have gone missing. Macon Police are investigating the missing electronics that are valued at $86,000.

Employees in the IT Department noticed the computer inventory shrinking in February. 55 PC’s, 20 laptops, and 40 monitors are missing.

According to the police report, the thefts may have started back in May of last year, when there was construction taking place at Terminal Station. The police report also states about 5 people had keys to the area were the computers were kept, another 14 had the door code, and construction workers and air conditioning installers had access to the area during construction. The IT Department does not have an alarm system or surveillance.

Macon Police have been investigating the case for more than a month and has kept City Council in the dark.

 Macon Police Spokesperson, Jami Gaudet says, “There was some question on us not releasing the incident report and that was my decision at that time. It  was a matter of what I considered possible liability so we withheld the report until we cleared it with the City’s Attorney’s Office.”

Macon City Councilman, Rick Hutto, says, “By the very fact that we are elected city officers.. surely we can be trusted to be told that we have yet another problem.”

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert would not comment because of the on going investigation. No arrests have been made in this case, and Macon Police did not say whether there are any leads.
