Proposed Law Would Allow Motorcycle Riders to Run Red Lights

A Georgia bill is being considered, and would give bikers the option to run a red light after waiting 60 seconds if the light doesn’t change.

Many lights still run on sensors instead of being on a timer. The problem is, motorcycles are too light to trigger those sensors, leaving bikers to sit and wait with no result.

Many biker organizations from around the state are backing the proposal.

Wesley Nobles of Macon says many times, waiting for a light to change to green is just plain annoying.

“You’re sitting there forever, waiting for a red light. It’s hot, you got a helmet on, you’re sweating, the bikes starting to overheat, and the light never changes.”

Nobles also says bikers are already extra defensive on the road, so having the law would not be a safety concern.

If the state passes the bill, Georgia would become the ninth state having legislation aimed at bikers sitting at red lights.
