Leadership Macon builds new playground and garden at Ingram- Pye Elementary

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – More than 30 volunteers are transforming a Bibb county school’s empty field into a fun place for students and a place to grow crops.

Volunteers made up of Leadership Macon class of 2014, are building a playground and creating a garden at ingram-pye elementary school.

The work actually began a week ago when they moved the playground equipment in place.
saturday, they hammered. sawed, cleaned, raked and built garden beds, for planting seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Betsy Fitzgerald of United Way says the Leadership Macon project is rewarding, because the school did not have a garden nor a playground.

“It is such a great feeling to know that we’re doing something good for our community” says Fitzgerald. “It is a great opportunity to make sure kids have an opportunity to have a safe place to not only play and have fun as kids but also to learn about gardening.”

Fitzgerald says Leadership Macon 2014 class wanted to create the garden to make sure, people living in the area would have access to fresh vegetables and fruits. More equipment for the new playground is scheduled to arrive in next week.
