Gordon seeking liability insurance for public officials and law enforcement

GORDON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The City of Gordon lost its liability insurance in June. The city’s current insurance agent, Rob Mixon, says it’s because of a half dozen EEOC lawsuits that have been filed against the city within the last six months.

“Insurance companies want to make sure that it’s not a pattern that continues to go on because of politics or whatever,” said Mixon.

Mayor Pro-Tem, Terry Eady says one insurance company offered a $250,000 liability policy. It included a $75,000 premium, plus a $50,000 deductible per incident.

“It was just, too high of a premium and it was not enough coverage for us to invest in that type of of money and we’re still looking around trying to find something that’s more reasonable,” said Eady.

The city is working with Mixon Insurance Company to find liability insurance coverage for the city’s public officials and law enforcement.

“There were some concerns that if they didn’t have insurance, police cars wouldn’t be able to roll, and the fire department wouldn’t be able to help people,” said Mixon.

Christina Layer has lived in Gordon for about 18 years. She’s worried that if the city doesn’t have adequate insurance, what that could mean for residents.

“Everybody needs liability insurance and if something happens, I mean certain people aren’t covered,” said layer. “It’s not right.”
