Bibb County Schools increasing security measures at elementary schools

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Children are the priority.

The Bibb County School District has started increasing its security measures.

With the string of school shootings in recent years–the district feels their efforts are needed now more than ever.

It wants to make sure everyone who enters their school is there for a valid reason.

“We have implemented what’s called phase 1 security at the front doors,” said Executive Director of Risk Management at the school district David Gowan.

Getting through the door at L.H. Williams Elementary School takes more than just a pull.

“A visitor will approach the school and when they approach the school they should not be able to open the front door and just walk in,” said Gowan.

Bibb County Schools recently installed stronger security measures to help protect students.

“And they buzz the door and show the ID, and someone in the office will click them in,” said Gowan.

“I think it’s very important for a parent to feel like their child is safe where they are,” said parent Leslie Andres.

Andres has a son and she feels the schools are already pretty safe.

“But of course, it’s important to use common sense and implement whatever we can do so they can continue to be,” said Andres.

That’s Bibb County’s goal.

David Gowan runs security for the district.

“We’re always evaluating our safety programs and our facilities to improve student safety and employee safety–visitor safety,” said Gowan.

Gowan wants to reassure parents–Bibb County is only getting safer despite recent school shootings like the one in Oregon last week.

“That means also a stranger or someone who has ill intent can’t walk up and open the door,” said Gowan.

The school district has spent thousands of dollars to improve its security system.

But, teachers also have other affordable options to keep their classrooms safer.

A group of educators in Iowa have created “The Sleeve”.

It’s a metal piece that slips on a door closer, which keeps the shooter out.

While Bibb County hasn’t looked into this particular device, Gowan says he’s open to new ideas.

“There’s always lessons that can be learned from other instances around the country,” said Gowan. “We always look at those.”

Gowan adds he hasn’t heard any complaints from parents about the new security.

In the Fall, the district will issue each faculty member ID cards to get in and out of their school building.
