Agape Love Transit Tries to Get Back on the Road

Imagine you’re a dialysis patient with no way of getting to your weekly appointments.

Tonya Johnson and Elizabeth Holmes are best friends and the founders of Agape Love Transit, a non-profit organization that provides transporation to those who need it.

“Our motto is if you can provide the gas, pay for our drivers, then we’ll take you as far as you can go…” says Johnson.

The friends started the organization in 2007. Both being from out-of-town, they were surprised to see Houston County without a mass transit system. The ladies met while both working in home healthcare and knew the significance of getting to doctors appointments.

Someone else who knows the importance of weekly appointments is Elizabeth Goss of Warner Robins. Goss has depended on public transportation growing up in New York City. When she moved to Middle Georgia, she took advantage of Agape.

“You tell them where you’re going, you tell them the time, they pick you up 15, 20 minutes, half hour earlier and take you to your destination and when you’re finished they bring you back.”

If you couldn’t afford it, Agape worked with you. The service was also utilized by college students and working citizens.

“Everybody doesn’t want to be on welfare, they want to work, they want to take care of their kids, but if they don’t have a system to help them do that then it becomes absolutely vital and absolutely difficult,” says Holmes.

Donations and some funding has helped the organization provide transportation to more than 350 people, but Agape recently put the brakes on the driving when it’s vehicles stopped running.

“Our vehicles need new transmissions,” according to Holmes.

As of the first of the year the non-profit has had to stop servicing Middle Georgians.

“We can’t go on anymore because we don’t have any funds, people aren’t able to give anymore and we need the help of the community to help us continue on this great service,” says Johnson.

The friends say they have made a promise to God and believe that if they give, it shall be given back to them.
