Law Enforcement Veteran Looks Back on 35 Years

JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — After more than three decades of working in law enforcement, Twiggs County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Billy Boney has no plans to stop serving and protecting law abiding citizens.

He got his start in law enforcement with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office in 1980. Four agencies and nearly 35 years later, he’s still helping to fight crime around middle Georgia.

Before becoming Chief Deputy at the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office, Boney worked for the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Macon Police, and Gray P.D.

“I was a diesel mechanic, an insurance salesman, I was an assistant in a veterinary clinic…I was a lot of things before I decided to be a police officer,” said Boney.

He realized he wanted to work in law enforcement after his experience with the United States Army.

“I was over in Korea for 18 months, I was there when the pueblo got seized and I was a century dog handler,” Boney said. 

He got his first job with BCSO and he never looked back.

“My daddy used to tell me all the time, son just do the next right thing and you’ll be okay, that’s pretty much the way it’s been…I’ve tried to do the right thing and it’s paid off for me in the long run,” added Boney.

In his career, he’s seen things he could never imagine. Luckily, he’s lived to share the stories.

Through all the years he’s spent serving and protecting miraculously, he’s walking around without any bullet wounds.

“Thank God I’ve never had to shoot anybody and thank God even more I haven’t been shot,” said Boney.

When the going gets tough, Boney has a couple people he can call.

“For certain I believe in Jesus Christ our Savior, my wife is my best friend and best support.”

Those breaking the law may never offer him a thank you.

“Nobody thanks you for locking them up or giving them a ticket but you have the self satisfaction knowing you did the right thing.”

That’s what Boney said makes putting his life on the line, worth it.
