No. 11 GC Men’s Tennis Team Records Second Shutout
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The No. 11 Georgia College men’s tennis team (2-1) got their second 9-0 shutout of the young season Saturday, this time against Erskine College (0-2) Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. Freshman Kyle Kinsler (Suwanee, Ga.) was the only Bobcat not to lose a game in singles play today, winning in straight sets.
Georgia College entered singles play with a 3-0 lead. The Bobcat second doubles team of sophomore Taylor Powell (Martinez, Ga.) and freshman Anton Waern (Taby, Sweeden) got the lone doubles shutout over Andre Andre and Alan Pearce. Kinsler paired with Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) to up the Bobcat lead to 2-0 with an 8-2 win over Robert Clarke and Benny Uy at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Alex Schubert (Frankfurt, Germany) and sophomore Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) concluded doubles play with an 8-6 win over Jason Harris and Wilson Matthews at first doubles.
Playing in his first action of the season, Alex Nolley (Cumming, Ga.) put the Bobcats at 4-0 with 6-0, 6-2 set wins over Uy at No. 6 singles. Kinsler then shutout Clarke in straight sets at No. 5 singles to clinch the team win.
The next three wins went to Waern, Hass, and Campus, respectively. Waern beat Andre 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Regionally-ranked Hass took care of Harris with two 6-2 sets at first singles, while Campus moved to 3-0 on his birthday with 6-3, 6-0 wins over Pearce.
The only drama to come from today’s contest came in the final match at No. 2 singles. Powell won the first set with a shutout, but dropped the second 4-6 before winning in the third 10-2 to secure the team’s shutout for the ninth point of the afternoon.
The men’s tennis team travels to Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday, Feb. 22 for a 1 p.m. start in Americus, Ga.
