Hines Reflects on Years as Superintendent for Houston County Schools
PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – In a little more than 90 days, Houston County School’s Superintendent is stepping down after four years at the helm, and the board of education has already started discussing his replacement.
As the clock winds down, Dr. Robin Hines is still working full throttle to get things done.
The Houston County School Supeintendent hasn’t retired yet, but is happy he’s leaving while the district is at the top of its game.
Even with all of the accolades, the praises, and the opportunities, Hines says it’s time to get QT with his family.
“I have two daughters in the Athens area. One is moving to Huntsville. My son is graduating and going to (the University of) Georgia, to Athens. It’s just problematic,” Hines said.
A day in the life of a superintendent can be a long one, and Hines wants to put that same effort into his wife and kids.
“It’s time for me to give up a little bit and do for them. My wife retired last year and she recommends it very highly,” he said.
After only four years on the job, Hines reflected on the positives and the negatives, including the recent stir about certain schools re-zoning.
But there are also programs like EDGE Academy, outreach for students with disabilities, and opportunities for gifted and talented young people.
“The things that I’m most proud of are the employees in this system. I’m talking about great teachers. We have great administrators. The executive cabinet is talented, smart just beyond anything I could ever imagine,” Hines said.
Hines takes pride in that great team to work and what he calls the “Houston County way.”
“When all of these things bring a lot of people together to do a great job, and I’m just grateful and honored to have been just a small part in all of that,” he said.
Even though Hines won’t get a vote on who the next superintendent will be, he recommended the board should select someone from within the district.
Hines’ last day is on May 30th.
