Houston County School Board Members Make Unanimous Decision on Rezoning Proposal

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today, the Houston County school board unanimously voted to rezone school districts.

Dozens of parents and teachers came out to the meeting to witness the board’s decision, hoping their thoughts and opinions from last night’s meeting were taken into consideration.

A motion made by board member Dave McMahan to push back Elko road to the west, near Interstate 75 passed.

The changes will effect children who attend Perry elementary schools along with Russell Elementary, Pearl Stephens Elementary and C.B. Watson Primary.

“Rezoning is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing, because Houston County has a wonderful school system and we’re growing, so we have to build new schools and we look forward to that,” says Board chairman, Dr. Marianne Melnick.

Melnick believes the board did everything possible to hear the voices and needs of those who would be greatly affected by the change.

“We wish that we could make every single person happy–that would be great, that would be ideal—but, that’s not realistic. So, that’s were we-as a board-try to do the best that we can,” Melnick says.

The rezoning changes take effect in the fall 2014-2015 school year.
