Red Cross of Central Georgia Offers Shelter During Winter Storm
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The American Red Cross of Central Georgia is working with emergency management agencies and community leaders to help those who will be impacted by Wednesday’s winter storm.
Tracy Willis-Kight with the local chapter tells 41NBC they are working with the EMA and Salvation Army to provide sheltering for the overflow of people looking to stay warm. Willis-Kight says this is a fairly new process where people looking for shelter first go to the Salvation Army. If the Salvation Army is at capacity, they will be transported to the Red Cross’s shelter at the Macon Memorial Gym, located at 763 Long Street.
Willis-Kight says as of Wednesday morning, the Salvation Army is full and they sheltered 13 people overnight. The shelter provides food and a warm, safe place for people to get out of the cold.
It is “another way we’re working together to support the community,” Willis-Kight said.
During the day, Willis-Kight says those who seek shelter will go to Daybreak. They will come back to the Macon Memorial Gym at 4 p.m. for food and shelter.
Willis-Kight says the local Red Cross chapter also provided cots and blankets to Baldwin and Monroe counties.
She adds this is the third time they have used this new process and called it “successful” in the past.
