Mercer Lacrosse Opens Season Against Boston Saturday, Interested Kids Get in Free

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s game week for Mercer’s men’s lacrosse team!

Saturday, the Bears host Boston at Mercer University Stadium.  Boston is a startup program,  but 2nd-year Mercer coach Kyle Hannan says the Terriers could cause some problems for the Bears.

“The type of school that Boston University is academically and their geographic location really lends itself to grabbing very talented lacrosse players,” Hannan says.  “And that’s what they’ve done.”

Mercer is entering its fourth season of play.  The Bears won just twice through their first two seasons, but last year (Hannan’s first at Mercer) the Bears won four games.

The team’s improvement, plus a little community outreach, has helped spark interest across middle Georgia.  A few Macon private schools have announced they plan to field lacrosse programs of their own in the near future.

“We’re reaching out to the community and offering Game Passes for any young player that either has played in the past or has a desire to learn about the game,” Hannan says.  “They get to come in for free, and there will be some instructional pieces during the game with the current coach to explain the rules.”

Aside from free admission, interested kids will have a special seating section at Saturday’s game, plus they’ll be entered into a raffle for a lacrosse stick–one for a boy, and one for a girl.

Game Passes are for kids in grades 1-8.  Adults can get in for $5.  The game starts Saturday at 1.
