School Closings in Georgia

DeKalb County’s interim school
superintendent has amended a redistricting plan and now proposes
that eight schools close instead of 14.

The district unveiled the revamped plan Monday night, which
calls for the schools to close in August. The school board is
scheduled to vote on the plan March 7.

Of the schools being closed, Avondale High School will remain
open as the DeKalb School of the Arts.

Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson said some of the schools
that were spared this time could close next year.

Officials say the redistricting plan was needed to remove 11,300
empty seats to generate more state funding. Under the revised plan,
the district will eliminate 5,125 seats.
