School Rezoning Causes Tension in Houston County

HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A rezoning battle in Houston County is creating tension between concerned parents and the Board of Education.

The Houston County Board of Education proposed a school rezoning plan last year, and will vote on the final plan this week.

Father of two children, Raymond Jones worries about the changes, and what the new zones mean for his children.

After 41NBC spoke with Superintendent Dr. Hines, he says the changes will compensate for the county’s growth in population.

Jones says otherwise. He believes with his kids switching from Kings Chapel Elementary to Tucker Elementary will make a huge difference for his kids, socially and academically.

“It’s concerning for us, because it’s really creating upheaval in our children’s lives as far as moving them from one school to another when there’s really no reason to do so,” says Jones.

The board is pulling students from surrounding schools to populate a new school–Langston Road Elementary.

“We wish that everybody could be happy, but that can’t be a goal of ours because it’s impossible,” Hines says, “Rezoning is certainly always a difficult task. Wherever a line is drawn somebody’s on one side of it…or the other.”

The board plans to vote on the revised proposal Tuesday, February 11 at 1:00 p.m.
