Mercer’s Gollon Tabbed Capital One Academic All-District First Team
MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Mercer men’s basketball senior Jakob Gollon was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative Grade Point Average. Candidates must also have completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be a sophomore, junior or senior athletically.
District IV players are comprised of student-athletes from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and Puerto Rico. Gollon joined four other players on the Division I All-District first team, representing the University of Alabama, the University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University and Stetson University.
With his first team selection, Gollon is now eligible for Academic All-America honors. First, second and third team Academic All-American honorees will be released in February. Gollon was also a District IV first team selection last year.
Gollon recently earned a master’s degree in educational leadership, graduating with a 3.916 GPA in the coursework. This semester, Gollon has started pursuit of a doctoral education degree. As an undergraduate, Gollon earned a bachelor’s degree in communications and graduated with a 3.47 GPA.
An integral part of Mercer’s on-court success, Gollon has started every game for Mercer since the beginning of the 2011-12 season. During that time, he’s help lead the Bears to a 68-28 record while averaging 9.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
Just this season, Gollon became Mercer’s 37th member of the program 1,000-point club, and also scored a career-high 37 points in the Bears’ triple overtime win at Valparaiso.
Gollon was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after suffering medical hardships in his first two collegiate seasons. He’s already played in 140 games and now just six games short of breaking into the top 20 all-time among NCAA career leaders in games played.
Prior to the season, Gollon was named one of 30 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, the nation’s premier award for NCAA senior student-athletes. The list of 30 finalists is set to be narrowed to 10 in the coming weeks.
Gollon and his teammates return to the hardwood on Friday night, traveling to East Tennessee State for a 7 p.m. game.
