Young Selected to Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American Third Team
MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Mercer junior third baseman Chesny Young picked up another impressive national honor on Monday afternoon as he was voted onto the 2014 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American third team.
This is Young’s second Preseason All-American distinction earned over the last week as he was also named a NCBWA Preseason All-American third team member on December 18.
Young was the only player from the state of Georgia named to the Louisville Slugger All-American teams and joined East Tennessee State’s Clinton Freeman as the only members from the Atlantic Sun Conference recognized by the publication.
Young secured a third team selection after ending a magical 2013 campaign with an A-Sun Conference leading .401 batting average. Young’s .401 clip was the sixth-highest in the nation and made him just the sixth player in Mercer baseball program history to finish a season with a .400 or better batting average. The Atlanta, Ga. native was named the 2013 A-Sun Conference Player of the Year after finishing last season on a 30-game hitting streak and ranking second in the country with 105 hits.
Young also finished last season leading the A-Sun Conference with 141 total bases while ranking second in the league with 65 RBI and a .458 on-base percentage. Young also became just the 48th player in A-Sun Conference history to hit .400 or better in a season.
Young is the third Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American picked up a Mercer baseball player over the last four years as senior Nick Backlund was named a Preseason All-American first team selection prior to the 2013 season and former third baseman Jacob Tanis was voted a Preseason All-American third team member prior to the 2011 campaign.
Young joins a very talented and veteran group of players back for the start of Mercer’s 2014 campaign. The Bears open their 2014 season at home against High Point on February 14.
