Senator Isakson Holds Town Hall Meeting in Milledgeville; Talks Obamacare, Savannah Port Project

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson made a stop in Milledgeville to hold a town hall meeting to talk with residents about issues they have about things in Washington D.C. and also in their community.

“I’m a political science major, it was one of those things where I heard and I probably felt like it was Christmas come early because it was so exciting,” Caitlin Mullaney, a Senior at Georgia College & State University.

She was one of hundreds of students, faculty, and Milledgeville residents that filled up a Georgia College auditorium for Thursday’s town hall meeting with Senator Johnny Isakson.

The GCSU senior says the job market for liberal arts majors is slim, but she’s trying to stay positive.

“It’s one of those things where you need to go out and just work on it, and schools now are combining technical degrees into the liberal arts mission where you can have your passion, but also a marketable set of skills,” Mullaney said.

The job market wasn’t the only thing on people’s minds.

There were a broad range of topics from questions about NSA surveillance and gun control to Obamacare and its poor debut.

Isakson says Congress is slowly working to improve it.

“I think there will be significant changes made to it, one bite at a time, and Congress is trying to make it better for the American people,” Isakson said.

Another hot topic was how Georgia needs to take advantage of the port widening project in Savannah.

“It’s job one for us in Congress, the Savannah port is responsible for 297,000 jobs in Georgia. The new Panama Canal is going to take ships that won’t be able to dock in Georgia because of the depth that they’ll draft,” Isakson said.

Isakson thinks it’s an economic engine and the port along with Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta make Georgia what it is.

The senator says you have to take advantage of opportunities and Mullaney says she’s doing just that.

“He said one really good quote that I like. He said, ‘Luck isn’t luck, it’s opportunity mixed with preparation,” Mullaney said.

Senator Isakson is holding a number of town hall meetings across the state.

He says the goal is to meet with people he’s representing and also help with any concerns they may have, when he heads to the Capitol.
