GC Men’s Basketball Picks on Panthers, 95-82

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – With five double-digit scorers, the Georgia College men’s basketball team (1-0) started its 2013-14 season with a victory over Clark Atlanta University (0-1) 95-82 Monday night at the Centennial Center.

GC men’s basketball extends the season-opener win streak to eight, the last loss in an opener coming to Tusculum College in 2005.

Sophomore guard Terrell Harris (Indiantown, Fla.) led all scorers with 19 points in the transfer’s first game as a Bobcat. Classmate Robert Armstrong (Norcross, Ga.) put up a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards. Harris did a great job filling the boxscore as well, pulling down eight rebounds, adding four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.

Ryan Blumenthal (Kennesaw, Ga.) added to the fray with 18 points, including 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Senior Royal Thomas (LaGrange, Ga.) had 12 points, with reserve Jeremy Newsome (Gulfport, Miss.) nearly matching that off the pine in just 14 minutes.

The Bobcats made more than half their shots, hitting 30-of-57 (.526) from the floor, compared to just 32 percent (27-85) from the Panthers. Georgia College was fouled 32 times in a game that featured 54 total fouls. The Bobcats went 33-of-44 (.750) from the line, led by 10 from Blumenthal and nine from Harris.

The Panthers were paced by an amazing 14-point, 21-rebound double-double from Dwayne Bingham, as he led five CAU players in double-digits as well. Jarrel Joye and reserve Derek Harper each tallied 13, with Kenneth Green and James Arnold adding 12 and 10, respectively. The Panthers’ bench out-scored Georgia College 39-24, to keep the game close.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Nov. 15 playing in a two-day tournament at Paine College in Augusta, Ga. Georgia College plays Albany State University Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on the host squad Saturday at 8 p.m.
