Local Church Group Heads to Haiti

It’s been one year since the devastating earthquake in Haiti that left around 250,000 people dead. A year later, hundreds of thousands of people are still living in tent cities in the nation’s capital, Port-Au-Prince, but Middle Georgia hasn’t forgotten about the need there.

At least a dozen members of the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, will spend 8 days working along side the Haitians helping with construction projects.

5 of the group members also have medical training and will teach students in Haiti about vision and other healthcare. 

Bill McLees, who will be making his third trip to Haiti, helped organize the trip. “As Christians we’re commanded to help others, and to do what we can for our fellow man,” said McLees.

McLees was in Haiti in May, and said, “The majority of debris was still there.”

Pastor Bob Setzer will be making his first mission trip to Haiti, and even though he is not familiar with construction he is not discouraged, “I don’t have any construction skills, but I can work hard, and they’ll point me to a roof or a paint brush and we’ll get the job done.”

Church members will partner with the Haiti Outreach Program, an organization that’s rebuilt over 100 homes in the past year.
