Heavner Named Capital One Academic All-District Selection

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Senior defender Joey Heavner was recognized yet again for his stellar work both on and off the field on Friday morning when he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 first team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least 3.30 cumulative grade point averages. Candidates also must complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be at least sophomores athletically.

Heavner was one of just 11 players in the entire district to receive the honor and joined Stetson’s Andreas Schnabl as the only players in the Atlantic Sun Conference to be voted onto the squad.

With his All-District first team selection, Heavner is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, where first, second and third team members will be selected later this month.

Heavner has had strong bounce back season in 2013 after missing all of last season due to injury. The Landisville, Pa. native has appeared in all 17 of Mercer’s games this season and has four assists to date which ranks tied for second in the A-Sun Conference.

For his career, Heavner has 21 assists which is the most among all active players in the A-Sun Conference and puts him just one behind Maxwell Rooke for the most assists in a career in Mercer program history.

Heavner has also received the starting nod in 76 matches over his five years in Macon which is a Mercer program record and is just two starts away from the most matches started over a career in A-Sun Conference history.

Heavner and the rest of the Bears are back in action on November 2 when they take on Northern Kentucky. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at NKU Soccer Stadium.
