Mercer Men’s Golf Jumps to No. 26 in Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings
MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – The Mercer men’s golf team’s victory on Sunday afternoon at the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship is turning heads in the college golf community, as evidenced by the team’s rise to No. 26 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. The Bears were also picked as Golfweek’s Team of the Week on Monday.
Golfweek staffers picked Mercer after the Bears rode a tournament record 16-under 272 in the second round to the Brickyard Collegiate Championship. Mercer captured the win over Golfweek’s No. 3 team, Georgia Tech, while senior Hans Reimers and freshman Emmanuel Kountakis picked up co-medalist honors.
The Golfweek article written by Cassie Stein is the number one piece in the outlet’s “5 Things To Know Right Now” on its college golf page.
Mercer’s No. 26 spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings is based on a mathematical formula that includes data about each team’s schedule strength and record. Before winning the Brickyard, Mercer checked in at No. 68 in the system’s rankings.
Kountakis, who has now tied for 17th and 1st in his only two collegiate events is ranked as the nation’s No. 86 player in the Golfweek Individual rankings.
The Bears will get another chance to move up in the standings next week, as the team heads to Georgia State’s AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic. Other top-30 teams at the event are No. 6 Georgia and No. 24 South Florida.
