Mercer Women’s Soccer Rallies for 3-2 Road Win over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (MERCER RELEASE) – The Mercer women’s soccer team went on the road and pulled out a 3-2 come from behind win over East Tennessee State on Friday evening at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

Mercer (7-5-1, 2-1-0 A-Sun) found itself down by scores of 1-0 and 2-1, but found the resolve to score a pair of late goals to come away with its first road win at ETSU since 2009.

“We challenged our girls to come out and play hard and stick to the game plan for a full 90 minutes tonight and I think we did that,” head coach Tony Economopoulos said. “I definitely felt we were the more aggressive team in all phases of the game and I am very proud of our girls to get this great result tonight despite being on the road in a tough environment.”

The Bears willed their way to victory with three more goals tonight, giving them an Atlantic Sun Conference leading 32 for the season and a perfect 6-0 record when scoring three goals or more in 2013.

Down 2-1 late in the second half, junior Lauren Gassie got the comeback started when she ran onto a chip pass and slid in a shot past ETSU goalkeeper Jasmine Elliot to tie things at 2-2 in the 78th minute.

Continuing to press forward, Mercer completed its late game rally when senior Casey Barrett settled a cross from freshman Katelyn Dimopoulos and fired a shot low and past the keeper in the 83rd minute of play to give the Bears the 3-2 win.

Sophomore Maggie Cropp made six saves in goal for Mercer, her seventh game this season with five or more saves.

Mercer continues its road swing when it travels to South Carolina to take on USC Upstate on October 6. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at County University Soccer Stadium.
