GC Women’s Tennis Begins Play at ITA Regional Championships

SUMTER, SC. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College women’s tennis team opened up the ITA Fall Regional Championships Friday in Sumter, SC. The championships are a four-day event with only the first round of doubles and first two of singles being played Friday.

In singles A action, senior Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) won two matches, the first over Coker College’s Daniela Chipe by a score of 7-5, 0-6, 6-1. In the round of 32, Marevic defeated Raluca Pavel of Clayton State University in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. Freshman Hannah Serdina (Suwanee, Ga.) also advanced two rounds forward with wins over Erskine College’s Mika Goyette and Anderson University’s Avery Owens by scores of 6-4, 7-5 and 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

Freshman Macy Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) faced off against Nora Westbye of Francis Marion University in the first round, winning easily 6-1, 6-3. She won her second round match in straight sets as well, a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Columbus State University’s Laura Chapman. Macy’s sister Cristalei Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) suffered the lone loss of the day for the Bobcats, dropping a three-set heartbreaker to USC Aiken’s Julia Arruda in the first round by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.

Both Bobcat doubles teams won in the Open A division. Marevic and Serdina defeated Clayton’s Hannah Keeling and Martina Dedaj by a score of 8-6. The same was the case for Macy and Cristalei Polk who prevailed by the same score over Melissa Laing and Christina Rustscheff of Queens University.

The Bobcat women will continue action at the ITA Championships Saturday through Monday in Sumter, S.C.
