Polk Shines, Bobcats Battle on Second Day of ITA Regionals
SUMTER, SC. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College women’s tennis team saw an increase in competitive level Saturday at the ITA Fall Regional Championships in Sumter, S.C. Freshman Macy Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) provided a bright spot, knocking off the number two seed in day two action.
Polk started her day against the number two seed overall, Olivera Jokic of Columbus State University. It took three sets, but Polk advanced to the quarterfinals by a score of 6-0, 5-7, 6-1. Unfortunately, Polk would then drop her next match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to CSU’s Beatriz Leon.
The other two Bobcats still alive in the singles A bracket Saturday both lost their first match in the round of 16. Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) took an early lead over Hannah Keeling of Clayton State University, but would eventually fall 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Hannah Serdina (Suwanee, Ga.) was shut out against Leon, ending the Bobcat rookie’s run.
Both doubles pairings also lost their first matches of the day in the round of 16. Sisters Macy and Cristalei Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) were defeated by Nora Westbye and Julia Graf of Francis Marion University, 8-3. Marevic and Serdina faced off against CSU’s Elena Preadca and Camila Tobar, dropping the contest 8-5.
The ITA Championships will continue through Monday in Sumter, S.C., the fall season for Georgia College women’s tennis has come to a close. Stay tuned to GCBobcats.com for a spring schedule release.
